A Handmade House Studio

Karen of A Handmade House

Meet The Maker Karen Angelo, the artist behind A Handmade House Studio in Sherman, Connecticut. A Handmade House creates the sweetest addition to your kitchen essentials in the form of 100% cotton handwoven potholders and trivets with delicately cross-stitched designs sure to warm your heart {but keep the heat away from your fingers and tabletop}. Karen creates potholders in many patterns including plaid, cross, and checkered, and cleverly adds cross stitched icons like hearts, stars, flowers and skulls.

Karen started making textiles on a table loom years ago. In 2020 she started weaving potholders and trivets to sell on Etsy and in local Connecticut shops, and her business just took off. Karen experiments with avocado seeds and indigo dyes to create her unique dye colors, and her creative cross stitched designs are a way of leaving a personal touch on her work. The potholders are an expression of Karen’s sustainable mindset and her creativity.

Tucked in the traditional colonial saltbox homes of Sherman, Connecticut sits her weaving studio, A Handmade House, lovingly named after Karen’s dream to live in a home full of all-things vintage and handmade. Karen’s background in interior design expertly suits her for choosing the potholder colors and patterns, and adds those special designer touches to your kitchen accessories, serveware, tabletop and home bar.

Along with hand-dyeing textiles, Karen cross-stitches fine details on her potholders that can’t be achieved with weaving alone. She has created a signature “layered” style that perfectly represents her layered passion for sustainability, reclaimed furniture and vegan cooking.

Welcome to A Handmade House!

Simplicity of the home itself was reflected in the life that happened within it; it was very much tied to the seasons and the challenge of getting through each winter.” — Earle G. Shettleworth Jr.
