Brooklyn Slate Company

Brooklyn Slate Company was founded by Brooklyn graphic designer Sean Tice and Parsons graduate student Kristy Hadeka. After visiting Kristy’s family slate quarry in upstate New York in the spring of 2009, we gathered a few pieces we could use as all purpose boards at home in Brooklyn.

We used the slate slabs as trivets for tea kettles and hot dishes, coasters, and serving trays and began giving them to friends. The response was so overwhelmingly positive that the two struck out to produce a line of slate products.

Our slate is sourced from the Vermont and New York Slate Valley, a unique geological formation that runs between Vermont and New York states. Slate is one of the most durable, naturally occurring stones readily available.

Our boards are preferred in restaurants around the world for their craftsmanship and durability. Each board we cut is at least 3/8” thick, making it stronger than most plates and sturdy enough to withstand commercial dishwashers.
